The experience
Some journeys begin with a boarding pass; this one begins with a sea breeze. From the Gateway of India, your ferry glides an hour across the harbour to Elephanta Island — and with every minute, modern Mumbai falls further behind.
On the island, a cheerful toy train trundles you past Gharapuri village to the base of the hill, where 120 stone steps climb through a gauntlet of souvenir stalls and opportunistic monkeys to one of India's great wonders: cave temples hewn straight into basalt some 1,500 years ago.
Inside, your TOGA guide brings the stone to life — culminating at the Maheshmurti, the colossal three-faced Shiva that is among the finest sculptures ever carved in India: creator, preserver and destroyer gazing out of a single rock.
Good to know
- Ferries run daily except when monsoon seas are rough; the caves are closed on Mondays.
- The climb is gentle but real — palanquin chairs are available on the island for anyone who prefers to be carried.
- Tolls, parking and logistics are bundled when you book this as our AM Elephanta + PM Sightseeing combination.
